OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE AND STANDARDS: USING OSS FOR CUSTOMER SOLUTIONS, july 5th 2007

The software cluster Lebanon Softshore by ELCIM has successfully completed its mission to France scheduled for December 3rd to 7th 2007 in Paris. This mission, led by the cluster manager Talal Hijazi, aimed to achieve productive meetings between Lebanese and French companies.

The cluster was present along with six of its member companies: B-Synchro, cr8-mania, infoplus, NETIKS, Sword Lebanon, and White Mountain. A seminar was held in the Confederation Generale des Petites et Moyannes Entreprises, CGPME , followed by one-to-one prearranged meetings.

The Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris, CCIP and the Echangeur event took place at the Bourse de Paris with 22 French companies participating in the event. The use of OSS in Europe is rapidly growing, not only by small companies but also by big players. However, since open source is not very common in Lebanon, this one-day workshop held on July 5th 2007 at IRI helped in clarifying a number of misconceptions of its potential for software companies.

It introduced OSS and the development community, and then placed it in the business context: cost advantages, support, contractual issues while providing practical examples on each. It also introduced Web 2.0, and the offering of Web 2.0 features with open source software, while providing example technologies and a case study followed by a very interactive discussion regarding the future of similar technologies.
